Funkadelic - Funkadelic
Released in 1970, Funkadelic’s self-titled debut was a radical collision of psychedelic rock, gospel, blues, and soul. The record arrived as a chaotic, genre-defying statement that redefined the possibilities of music. Where Motown aimed for polish and crossover appeal, Funkadelic dove headfirst into distortion, improvisation, and spiritual ambiguity, offering a sound as gritty and unpredictable as the era itself. Backed by a ferocious young band — including Eddie Hazel, Billy Bass Nelson, Tawl Ross, Tiki Fulwood, and Mickey Atkins — the album rejected convention in favor of raw groove and existential noise.
The New Mastersounds - Live At La Cava
The New Mastersounds fourth album, Live At La Cova, was recorded live at La Cova Den Xoroi, a spectacular cliffside club on the island of Menorca, Spain. The album features Sam Bell on percussion along with the founding members of the band. This recording is a mix of NMS originals and covers of funk and boogaloo classics (including Grant Green’s Jan Jan, the Meter’s Funky Miracle, and Rusty Bryant’s Fire Eater).
Bernie Worrell - Wave From the WOOniverse
Wave From the WOOniverse is a double album from legendary keyboardist Bernie Worrell. As prolific as they come, Worrell was best known as a longtime member of Parliament-Funkadelic, in addition to collaborating with the likes of Talking Heads, Les Claypool, Gov’t Mule, Mos Def, and countless others. His latest collection of compositions was completed by a formidable cast of musicians across fourteen different cities, in order to finalize his singular vision. Among the many features are contributions from Bootsy Collins, Jerry Harrison, Leo Nocentelli, Sean Ono Lennon, and Fred Schneider, as well as a previously unissued Funkadelic cut. A co-release from Loantaka Records and Org Music, the release is available on 2xLP, CD, and digital formats.
Ohio Players - Pleasure
Pleasure is the 1972 record from Detroit funk pioneers the Ohio Players. Immediately returning to the studio after the initial success of their debut album, Pain, this would become the most influential album of their career. Massive chart success came with this record, propelled by the song "Funky Worm," which went on to become one of the most sampled songs in Hip Hop history.
Dennis Coffey - Finger Pickin Good
Guitar virtuoso Dennis Coffey’s first LP for Westbound Records was released in 1975, and is a tour de force in funky guitar wizardry unlike anything else. While Coffey’s technical fireworks remain the centerpiece of the record, some of the rawer psychedelic elements of his earlier work are replaced by a slicker, more produced sound. This new style clearly lays the groundwork for Coffey’s transition, as the 70's progress, into a more commercial, disco-oriented sound on his own recordings, as well as on his writing and production work for other artists such as CJ and Co. This long overdue reissue, retitled Finger Pickin Good, was remastered by Dave Gardner and includes the previously unissued bonus track “What It Is It Ain’t”.
The Big Ol' Nasty Getdown - Volume 2
Funk just got deeper, dirtier, and way more unpredictable and Volume 2 is where we really cut loose.
We’ve always been about bringing together funk legends, soul powerhouses, and jam-scene firebrands into one ever-evolving musical family, and on Volume 2 we take that idea further than ever before.
Where Volume 1 introduced the magic, Volume 2 doubles down. Over 60 musicians stepped into these sessions, including members of Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth, Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Living Colour, James Brown Band, Kool & the Gang, the Meters and more. These weren’t drive-by or phoned in features, everyone came to build, experiment, and leave their fingerprints on the music.
From fat bass lines and blazing horn breaks to heavy guitars, psych-soaked keys, and conscious, fearless lyrics, Volume 2 pushes funk into a perpetual deep groove. Every track stands on its own, but together they tell a bigger story. One about freedom, collaboration, and the raw joy of making music with no rules.
